International Conference on
Buddhist meditation across traditions and disciplines: Theories and Practices
Centre for the Study of Chan Buddhism and Human Civilization
The Chinese University of Hong Kong
19-21 May 2017

Date: 19-21 May 2017
Venue: The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Synopsis:
This conference aims at examining the theories and practices of Buddhist meditation in various traditions and different disciplines with the hope to map out some paradigms and methods for expounding and practicing meditation in contemporary world. The practice of meditation in a broad sense has been popularized in recent years, yet little work is done in the comprehensive and systematic studies of the theory and methods of Buddhist meditation in different traditions. Although some practices such as calmness (samatha; śamatha) and insight (vipassanā; vipaśyanā) can be found in almost all Buddhist traditions, they are understood and practiced in various forms across traditions. The conference will provide a platform for scholars and practitioners to explore Buddhist meditation not only based on Buddhist texts and traditions, but also in relation to the contemporary practices through a cross-disciplinary approach.
