Synopsis:

Since the end of the 19th century, the burgeoning of religious study has provided new perspectives for human beings to understand religion. Today, with the increasing new theories and methods, the study of religion has become a discipline of academic research in which religion is examined purely from scientific and rational perspectives, although more and more scholars have also realized the uniqueness of religion different from other object of learning. Under such circumstances, the study on religious practice and experience, especially the comparative study of theories and methods of meditation in different religions therefore attracted the attention of scholars worldwide. In view of this, Centre for the Study of Chan Buddhism and Human Civilization, Centre for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism, and Centre for Chinese Classical Learning of The Chinese University of Hong Kong jointly organize the International Conference on Inter-religious Meditation: Theories and Practices, inviting scholars from various religious traditions and disciplines to introduce, analyze and discuss different religious theories and methods of meditation. By following the discipline of religious studies, this conference aims to enable scholars to observe the practice of meditations, compare the experience of different religious practices. By such study, it is hopeful that both scholars as well as religious practitioners become more aware of the nature of religion thus contributing to the wellbeing of whole human beings.
